Slight Hiatus

30 April 2009 at 7:05 pm (Life)

Unless something really super dope comes my way, this will be the only post you see today. I’m studying for my first exam – taking place tomorrow morning. It’s on the first seven chapters of anatomy and the language of medicine. Right now I’m sitting pretty with a 94.5% average and I hope to maintain that. It’s also Thursday … and that means Grey’s is on. So, as you can see, my time is greatly limited today. I’ll keep you folk updated on how my exam went and whatnot and some stuff may get posted a day late but thats alright. I know y’all won’t hold it against me 🙂

Love & Blessings.

Texting Bus Driver Caught On Tape

29 April 2009 at 3:06 pm (News, technology) (, , , , , , )

I absolutely hate this and feel strongly about the idiot drivers that do this. I don’t care WHO you are, you are stupid. Anyone that operates a car and can’t WAIT to text at a light or when parked has issues. I mean, look how fast this bus was going! No brakes, nothing! Just straight plowed into the cars ahead. That’s scary as HELL! Learn to seperate yourself from your cell phone … shit.

“Slumdog’s” Child Actors Father Not Charged

29 April 2009 at 2:28 pm (Entertainment, Movies, News) (, , , , , , , , , )

MUMBAI, India — Indian police said Thursday they would not charge the father of a child star in the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire,” and ended their investigation into claims he tried to sell his nine-year-old girl to a reporter posing as a wealthy sheik.

Rubina Ali’s estranged mother, Khurshid Monish Dewade, filed a complaint against the girl’s father on Sunday, after the British tabloid News of the World reported that he offered to give Ali up for adoption in exchange for US$400,000, police said.

The newspaper — owned by News International Ltd., the main British subsidiary of News Corp., which also owns “Slumdog” distributor Fox Searchlight Pictures — said the deal was allegedly offered to one of its reporters.

The father, Rafiq Qureshi, has denied any wrongdoing.

The accusations further complicated the lives of the families of the slum-dwelling child stars, who have come under intense scrutiny since the movie skyrocketed to Oscar-winning fame and grossed more than US$300 million worldwide.

“There is not any crime. The matter is closed,” said Rahim Shaikh, the senior police inspector in Mumbai’s Nirmal Nagar, where the claim against Qureshi was processed.

No charges have been filed, he added.

Police questioned Qureshi but were unable to track down the three journalists who carried out the alleged sting.

Officers looked for them at the Leela, a five-star hotel where the report said they met Qureshi but they had already left, Shaikh said.

Police traced two mobile phone numbers the trio gave the hotel to local Vodafone SIM cards, which were activated on April 16 and deactivated April 19.

Indian police made no further efforts to contact the journalists or News of the World in England, Shaikh added.

“The matter is closed. No money changed hands. Rubina is here. There is no crime,” he said.

After the report, Rubina’s estranged mother thanked News of the World “for bringing this matter to light.”

“You have come like angels for me and my daughter and saved her from ending up God knows where,” she told the paper. “Who knows who Rubina would have been sold to, or what would have happened to my child if you hadn’t exposed Rafiq.”

Dewade could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Swine Flu Now In Toronto

29 April 2009 at 2:19 pm (Beauty, Health & Fitness, News, Toronto Life) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

The Ontario government is confirming four cases of swine flu in Ontario — and all are in the GTA. Three have been confirmed in Durham Region and one in York Region.

Officials say all four cases are considered mild and the patients are recovering at home.

The province says it will step up communication to the public to help people take precautions.

The announcement of the four Toronto-area cases came just hours after city officials said they were prepared to battle any potential swine flu infections in the city.

Mayor David Miller says the city has learned from the 2003 SARS outbreak, which killed 44 people.

Dr. David McKeown, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, outlined Toronto’s plan at a news conference on Tuesday.

He said the city will investigate travellers who show flu-like symptoms — a practice that has been in place for the four years since the SARS crisis.

He also confirmed Toronto has tested its pandemic response programs and increased alerts at emergency rooms. Miller says Toronto Public Health is working with hospitals to monitor any possible patients.

The city is asking that anyone who has recently travelled through Mexico City to see their doctor or call Telehealth Ontario.

“If you’re sick, stay home and get well and don’t transmit the germs to other Torontonians,” says Miller.

Symptoms include cough, fever, headaches, muscle aches and loss of appetite.

City officials remind everyone to practice good hygiene to help contain the spread, including frequent handwashing and sneezing into your sleeve to avoid spreading germs on hands.
